"This is the line for gelato?" was the recurring comment people threw in my direction. The line, which I'd been waiting in for an hour and a half, stretched past Big Nick's Burgers, Jubilee, Beard Papa and Lush, to end at Grom, which was celebrating its grand opening in New York by offering free gelato. "Yes, this is the line," I sighed wearily. "Nuts," was the inevitable response.
People coped with the wait in different ways. Some enjoyed the passing spectacle of strollers and dogs. (Some onlookers, taking pity on us, even offered their dogs for petting so that we'd have something to do while we waited.) I was entertained by the creative rantings of a lunatic ("Merry Passover! Merry Passover!" shouted a bearded man. But was he any more insane than people who'd wait 2 hours for a cup of gelato?). I saw some people give up and walk away, and others cut in line.
Finally, after 2 hours of achy feet and various conversations with strangers about Havanese dogs and Hillary's presidential prospects, I reached the end of the line... to find that the extra-dark chocolate was... all gone.
I scratched my head. How could this be? It's not like there weren't other enticing selections; I saw regular chocolate, stracciatella, strawberries and cream, hazelnut, cappuccino, gianduja. There were also a few flavors of sorbetto and Sicilian granita. But ever since I got addicted to Capogiro's cioccolato scuro, I simply must have the deepest, darkest chocolate gelato!
Well, I settled for the regular chocolate with a side of fior di latte. The chocolate was really quite chocolatey, almost like semi-frozen fudge. I dare say it was chocolatey enough even for me. And the milky, silky fior di latte was the most luscious sweet cold cream.
I'll be back to Grom soon; I just hope the line lessens a little!

If the line is so long then take the first flight to Paris. There you'll also find the real thing: the best Gelato and REAL Italian Caffe Espreso I have ever had in my life: @ Pozzetto, in the trendy Marais: a cute little place full of nice Italian guys and modern artwork from emergents artists
I am sure the Grom thing is something new for New Yorkers, because there really isn't a "good" gelato place for a city that size. Grom did a good PR stunt by offering freebies on their opening day. I wish them well. But by no means, New Yorker, think that is the best Italy has to offer. Grom got there first, that's all. In my experience in traveling in Italy, the best gelato is RivaReno that is headquartered in Milan and has brances in Turin, Milano Marittima and soon Verona. And that IS gelato. Hope they will also come to New York to give the New Yorkers a REAL taste of the REAL thing!
I have not had real gelato since Ive been in Italy.. Ive tried several places that claim to have the real thing, but I have yet to experience it myself. I miss it desperately.. so I am willing to try Grom, sounds promising. extra dark chocolate gelato sounds especially good. mmmm.
RivaReno Gelato in Milan! I have been there! The best gelato there is!
Grom was very disappointing. Its not the real thing. The only reason there's a line waiting is because the place is so small and the serving counter is so close to the store front, 6-10 people will create a long line outside the store. I've had awesome gelato at Ice Milan in Whippany, NJ.
I wonder whether RivaReno Gelato in Milan is the same as ice milan in whippany.
I left Turin for NY some months ago and for sure Grom is the best gelato of the city. They have lines everyday of the year, even longer than NY. Rivareno? As far as I know Rivareno makes gelato with bases bought by Parmalat. If it is true, I don't think that is "the real thing". Anyway there's nobody in Turin crazy for Rivareno. You don't have to stay il line ;-)
My fovourite flavour in Grom is Crema di Grom!
Thanks kkiss, for putting snooty sam in his place... I hate it anytime I have to read another "sure you rubes think it's good, but I know better I've had the real thing" post. RivaReno isn't close to the best you'll find.
